The Spanish Public Ministry opened, on Monday, an investigation against Luis Rubiales to investigate a possible sexual assault, after the “non-consensual” kiss of the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to the player Jenni Hermoso, during the celebrations of the women’s soccer world title, advances the AFP.
“The prosecutors of the National Court have opened preliminary proceedings to investigate the facts, which may constitute a crime of sexual assault,” reads the court statement, indicating that it will offer Hermoso the possibility of filing a lawsuit.
Jenni Hermoso returned this Friday to denounce Rubiales’ kiss during the celebrations of the Women’s Soccer World Cup. In an individual statement, she again mentions that the act was not consented to and she accuses the president of the RFEF of assault. The Public Ministry would have then invited the athlete to file a complaint against Rubiales, the Spanish newspaper El País reported on Monday.
The RFEF will meet urgently, this Monday, starting at 4:00 p.m. (3:00 p.m. in Lisbon) to discuss the temporary suspension of President Luis Rubiales, decreed by FIFA, on Saturday.
The general secretary of the RFEF, Andreu Camps, also requested the intervention of UEFA, the body that manages European football, after the measures adopted by the Spanish Government in the face of the scandal unleashed by the kiss and inappropriate gestures of Rubiales in the cabin at the final of the Women’s World Cup in Sydney, where she was accompanied by Queen Letizia and Infanta Sofía.
