The commission of presidents of the soccer federations of the autonomous communities of Spain demanded, this Monday, that Luis Rubiales resign from the presidency of the Royal Spanish Soccer Federation (RFEF) “immediately”, after kissing the soccer player Jenni Hermoso .
“Following the latest events and the unacceptable behavior that has seriously damaged the image of Spanish football, the presidents request that Luis Rubiales immediately present his resignation as president of the RFEF,” read the statement issued after a meeting of the organization. held at the federation headquarters in Las Rozas, northwest of Madrid.
The Committee of Presidents of Regional and Territorial Federations of the RFEF also asked the interim president, Pedro Rocha, to withdraw the most recent communication from the federation to UEFA and FIFA, which suspended Rubiales from office for 90 days, a circumstance which dictated the appointment of an interim president.
The group of federation leaders also reiterated their “unanimous support” for Pedro Rocha to start a new stage in the RFEF, where “dialogue and reconciliation with all football institutions are the line to follow”, in view of his candidacy for the 2030 World Championship, which is also a member of the Portuguese Football Federation.
The presidents of the regional federations also demand “a deep organic restructuring in the strategic positions of the RFEF” and are committed to “equality policies for the development of women’s football.”
Rubiales’ resignation comes after the event of August 20, when, at the end of the match that consecrated the Spanish women’s team as world soccer champion, in Sydney, at the time of the awards ceremony, the president from the RFEF kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips while they were celebrating.
Numerous criticisms of what happened followed, with the player stating that she had not consented to the kiss, after a first version said that everything had happened at a time of greater euphoria.
After several days of much criticism from various sectors of society, the RFEF held an Extraordinary General Assembly this Friday in which the resignation of Rubiales was expected, who, however, guaranteed, on more than one occasion, that he would not resign. in charge.
A new peak of response and extreme positions followed, with the players of the national team announcing that they were not available to represent Spain again, while the current leaders of the RFEF remain in their positions.
On Saturday, FIFA announced Rubiales’ suspension from office for 90 days, and 11 members of coach Jorge Vila’s coaching staff submitted their resignations. For his part, the coach condemned the “inadequate behavior” of the president of the RFEF and the Spanish Government announced a complaint before the Administrative Court of Sport (TAD).
If the court considers that the infractions are “very serious”, then the Superior Sports Council will convene its executive commission to initiate the suspension of Rubiales.
