Manchester United Brazilian international striker Antony has been dropped from the Brazil national football team after he was under investigation for domestic violence.
“Due to the facts that have come to light (…) involving Manchester United striker Antony, which must be investigated, and in order to preserve the alleged victim, the player, the Brazilian team and the CBF have [Confederação Brasileira de Futebol]informs the entity that the athlete has been withdrawn from the Brazilian national team,” said the CBF.
Similarly, the CBF adds that coach Fernando Diniz had called forward Gabriel Jesus, an Arsenal player who was part of the initial pre-summons list, for the double qualifying round for the 2026 Mundial.
On Monday, the Brazilian press published alleged messages from Antony to Gabriela Cavallin, his ex-girlfriend, in which the ‘red devils’ player even wished him dead.
The former girlfriend accuses Antony of assaulting her on multiple occasions, with footage showing her with a head wound and cuts on one hand, material that was turned over to authorities and led to the opening of an investigation at the police station of the woman.
Brazil will start qualifying for the 2026 World Cup with a reception in Bolivia on Friday (Saturday morning in Lisbon), followed by a visit to Peru on Tuesday (Wednesday in Lisbon).
