Portugal qualifies for the second qualifying play-off for the Women’s World Cup

The Portuguese women’s soccer team qualified this Thursday for the second qualifying round for the 2023 World Cup, after beating Belgium 2-1, in the first European qualifying match, played in Vizela.

Diana Silva put Portugal ahead, in the 28th minute, but Tessa Wullaert restored equality, in the 40th minute, from a penalty, before Fátima Pinto, in the 89th minute, signed the goal that gave the victory to the Portuguese team and confirmed the classification for the last continental ‘play-off’.

The ‘quinas’ team will now face Iceland, in the second qualifying play-off, scheduled for Tuesday, at 6:00 pm, in Paços de Ferreira.

If they beat the Icelanders and are one of the first two (points added in the group stage, with first, third, fourth and fifth, and in the second round of the ‘play-off’) among the three winners of the second round , Portugal will qualify for the World Cup.

If it manages to qualify, but as the worst classified, Portugal goes to an intercontinental ‘play-off’, which will dictate the last three places, in New Zealand (February 17 to 23, 2023), with Taiwan, Thailand, Cameroon, Senegal, Papua New Guinea, Haiti, Panama, Chile and Paraguay.

The Women’s World Cup Finals will take place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, 2023.
