The Portuguese judoka Miguel Gago, 19, won the bronze medal this Thursday in -66 kg at the European Youth Championships, which runs until Sunday in The Hague, Netherlands.
Miguel Gago secured the medal by beating the Israeli Eran Fiks in the decisive fight, by ippon, with 01:19 minutes left in a fight in which he was at a disadvantage. Waza-ari suffered about half of the four regulation minutes.
Previously, the Portuguese had fought four times, with three victories that guaranteed him qualification for the semifinals, a phase in which he lost to the Georgian Tengo Zirakashvili, which relegated him to the fight for bronze.
At the European Championships in The Hague, Portugal also had Bernardo Tralhão today at -66 kg, the judoka being eliminated in his debut, as was Alexandre Bucur, eliminated in his first fight at -60 kg.
The judoka María Silveira, leader in -57 kg of the world ranking of cadets, the lower age group and who is only 16 years old, managed to star in four fights, with two victories and two defeats, the last in the repechage, which gave her seventh place.
Portugal will also have on Friday Otari Kvantidze (-73 kg) and Taís Pina (-70 kg) competing in this European Championship, and Pedro Lima and Luís Diogo (-90 kg), Guilherme Silva (-100 kg) and Rosa Mané (+78 kilograms).
