German coach Roger Schmidt won the Coach of the Year award this Thursday, in reference to the last season of the first soccer league, when he led Benfica to win the championship in his first season with the Reds.
In the first edition of the Portugal League Awards gala, held today at the Alfândega do Porto, Roger Schmidt was the winner of the category, determined by a vote of coaches and captains.
Although he was not present at the ceremony, the German left a message of gratitude for the award via videoconference.
“Obviously I’m happy, it’s a good award. I’m happy about it, but when you work in football or are part of a sports team, there is always responsibility on the part of the players, the staff, the technical team and also the club. I see it that way, but I’m happy with the choice,” he said.
