Max Verstappen wins pole position at home

The reigning world champion set the fastest lap of 1,10,342 minutes, beating Monegask Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) by just 0.021 seconds and Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), who was third, by 0.092 seconds.

This was the 17th pole in Max Verstappen’s career, the fourth this season.

Leclerc looked like he would have the fastest time in the decisive third stage of qualifying, but Verstappen, who was close behind, managed to improve his time and dethrone the Monegasque driver for first place.

“It’s unbelievable. Today was very tight, but I love racing here. We’ve changed a lot since Friday and it was fun to drive,” said the Dutch rider.

Leclerc started one last try for the checkered flag, but a crest made by Mexican Sérgio Pérez caused his Red Bull to come to a stop in the middle of the final corner, forcing the sampling of yellow flags in the final sector of the circuit it is impossible for more riders to beat their times.

Pérez finished only fifth, behind Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), who finished fourth.

Briton Lando Norris (McLaren), who had qualified for Q3, ultimately did not leave the pits due to mechanical problems.

The Dutch GP is the 15th race of the season out of 22 scheduled.

Max Verstappen comes in this round with 93 points ahead of the runner-up, his teammate Sérgio Pérez.
