Sevilla sack Lopetegui after heavy defeat against Borussia Dortmund

Coach Julen Lopetegui was sacked as Sevilla commander shortly after the loss to Borussia Dortmund for the Football Champions League. The Spanish press says he was fired before the game started, but he went to the bench anyway to say goodbye… and go to Wolverhampton.

“Seville sacked Julen Lopetegui as coach after the game with Borussia Dortmund. Lopetegui concludes a successful period, with three brilliant seasons in which the goals were largely achieved, and a fourth in which the results are however not as expected, with Sevilla with only five points of the possible 21 points in the Spanish league,” the Andalusians said in a statement published on the official website.

Lopetegui’s departure comes a few minutes after Sevilla were again thrashed at home for Champions League Group G, this time by Borussia Dortmund, 4-1, after also losing 4-0 at home to Manchester City. In the middle he allowed a zero (0-0) in sight of Copenhagen.

Sevilla are third, with one point in three Champions League rounds, on par with the Danes, in a group led by the citizenswith nine, and with Dortmund in second, with six.

Sevilla have won just one of the 10 official games played this season, with six defeats and three draws, and in the Spanish League they occupy a modest 16th place, just above the relegation zone, with five points from seven games.

Julen Lopetegui, 56, took charge of Sevilla in 2019/20, after stints with Rayo Vallecano, Real Madrid B, FC Porto (between 2014 and 2016), the Spanish national team and Real Madrid, and in the first season he led the Sevilles to win the Europa League.

In his three seasons with the Andalusians, the team has always been fourth in the Spanish league, giving them direct access to the group stage of the Champions League three times.
