This Sunday, the German football federation fired the national coach of the men’s team, Hansi Flick, after Germany’s 4-1 defeat against Japan.
Just nine months away from hosting Euro 2024, Germany is left without a national team leader in what marks the first dismissal of a national coach since 1926.
National team head coach Rudi Völler, who was coach when Germany reached the 2022 World Cup final, will take on the role of coach on an interim basis for the Germans’ match against world runners-up France.
The leader of the German federation, Bernd Neuendorf, described Flick’s dismissal as “inevitable” taking into account his recent results at the head of the German team: three victories in 15 games in 2023, the last of them in March, against Peru.
