Rui Pinto: “It is a chapter that is closed and the fight will continue”

The main defendant in the case also said he had “listened attentively to the summary of the verdict” released this Monday: “Of course there are things I agree with, things I disagree with, things that are relevant and things that are unreasonable.”


Rui Pinto was sentenced to four years in prison, with a suspended sentence, in the case against Football Leaks, the chairman announced on Monday during the reading of the verdict at the Central Criminal Court of Lisbon.

“That one should refrain from behavior as discussed here. It presupposes a very serious attitude. In a constitutional state, no one can be above the law and not owe obedience to it. Not everything counts and everything can never count. No one more than the police and the courts would want justice to be delivered more quickly, but the end can never justify the means.”said Margarida Alves.

Over the course of approximately two hours, the chairman of the panel of judges mainly discussed the facts that were not considered proven during the trial, resulting in the conviction of Rui Pinto for nine crimes and the amnesty of ’79, in addition to the acquittal of the suspect. others. The partial sentences for each offense totaled ten years and nine months, but resulted in one four-year prison sentence, suspended upon execution.

The main defendant in the case was convicted of committing one crime of extortion in the form of attempted Doyen (two years in prison), three for aggravated correspondence violation against lawyers João Medeiros, Rui Costa Pereira and Inês Almeida Costa (a total of one year and nine months) and five of unlawful entry into Doyen, Sporting, the Portuguese Football Federation, the law firm PLMJ and the Public Prosecution Service (partial sentences totaling seven years’ imprisonment), the remainder falling as a result of the application of the amnesty law adopted as part of the Pope’s visit to Portugal and due to lack of evidence.

Rui Pinto was also ordered to pay damages totaling 22,078 euros, with lawyer João Medeiros receiving 15,000 euros, following the publication of his email inbox on the Mercado de Benfica blog. He must also pay 3,000 euros to Doyen and 2,039 euros to lawyers Rui Costa Pereira and Inês Almeida Costa, respectively.

Aníbal Pinto, on the other hand, was convicted as co-author of the only crime he was accused of: attempted extortion, which earned him a two-year suspended prison sentence, with the court understanding that they were trying to obtain “illicit enrichment”. at the expense of the investment fund. The judge also ruled that he must pay 2,500 euros to Doyen.

Rui Pinto, 34 years old, was accused by the Public Prosecutor of 90 crimes: 68 of improper access, 14 of violation of correspondence, six of unlawful access, involving entities such as Sporting, Doyen, the law firm PLMJ, the Portuguese Federation of Football (FPF) and the Public Prosecution Service (PGR), as well as for computer sabotage of Sporting’s SAD and for extortion, in the form of an attempt. This last crime concerns Doyen and also led to the prosecution of lawyer Aníbal Pinto.
