UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Croatia, the country’s football federation reported this Wednesday, after the display of a fascist flag from the Second World War in the match against Latvia.
The Croatian Federation explains that its followers raised a flag of the Ustase regime, a far-right nationalist party that took power in 1941, during World War II.
Croatia is already under UEFA jurisdiction for “discriminatory behavior” by fans at the Nations League in June in the Netherlands.
Given this situation, the Federation was prohibited from selling tickets for the home match they played on Monday and in which they beat Armenia 1-0.
The most recent investigation could lead UEFA to punish Croatia with the obligation to host Turkey behind closed doors, in the qualifying match for Euro 2024, which will be played on October 12, in Osijek.
Croatia leads its qualifying group for the Euro Cup, with the same 10 points as Turkey, but one less game played.
