The Portuguese rugby team made its World Cup debut with a defeat against Wales (28-8) in the second round of group C.

At half-time the Portuguese lost 14–3, but they came back determined to score more points and managed to set up a try from Nicolas Martins to take them to eight points.
With this victory, Wales leads the group with 10 points, after two games, while Portugal occupies the last place, without points, equal to Georgia, fourth, both teams with one game played.
In addition to Wales, Portugal, which is playing for the second World Cup in history after its debut in 2007, will also face Georgia (September 23), Australia (October 1) and Fiji (October 1).
