Tsegay shatters the competition record and Duplantis jumps another inch

At the Diamond League finals in Eugene, Oregon, 10,000-meter world champion Gudaf Tsegay broke the women’s 5,000-meter world record with a time of 14 minutes, 00.21 seconds, while Swedish varsity athlete Duplantis reached 6 meters, 23 centimeters .

Tsegay, 26, broke the previous record of 14:05.20, set by Kenyan Faith Kipyegon, on June 9 in Paris. “My goal today was the world record,” said Tsegay, who won the 2022 5,000-meter world title at the same track at Hayward Field in Eugene.

After two hares dropped out, Tsegay was guided by “wave light” track lighting technology, pulling away from world cross-country champion Beatrice Chebet to cross the finish line alone.

Kenyan Chebet came second with 14:05.92, the third fastest time ever.

Swedish star Duplantis smashed his own pole vault world record by 6.23 meters on his first attempt, bettering the 6.22 he set on February 25 in Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Current world and Olympic champion Duplantis has broken the pole vault world record seven times. Five of those points came indoors and both of his world marks outdoors came at Hayward Field in Eugene.

“I jumped very well here,” the beaming Swede told the crowd after surpassing the world record on his first attempt. Last month the Swede won the world title in Budapest with a height of 6.10 m and in June 6.12 in Ostrava. But since February it has missed a string of attempts at 6.23 metres, including last weekend in Brussels.

Another highlight on Sunday saw Emmanuel Wanyonyi setting the world’s best time in the 800 metres, 1 minute 42.80 seconds, beating Marco Arop – the man who beat him at the World Championships last month.

It was the second time in two weeks that Kenyan Wanyonyi defeated the Canadian world champion, following his victory in Xiamen on September 2, also with the best time ever, 1:43.20.

Arop led most of the way but was unable to stop Wanyonyi at the finish, finishing second with a Canadian record of 1:42.85.
