The vast majority of the players of the Spanish team today agreed to rejoin the team and face Sweden and Switzerland in the Nations League, following an agreement with the Federation and the Government, the chairman of the Superior Sports Council announced.
“We have reached a series of agreements that will be drawn up and signed tomorrow by the Federation and the Supreme Council of Sport”said Victor Francos this morning, after hours of negotiations with the players.
“Of the 23 players called up, two asked to leave the stage due to (…) personal inconvenience”he added.
The government representative did not reveal the names of the two players in question, but stressed that they will not be subject to sanctions, contrary to what was previously announced.
Spain’s new coach, Montse Tomé, surprised on Monday by calling up fifteen world champions and other players for the matches against Sweden and Switzerland who had asked not to be called up until there were changes within the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). following the scandal surrounding the forced kiss between former president Luis Rubiales and footballer Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup in Australia.
Despite Rubiales’ dismissal, the Spanish internationals declared on Tuesday that they did not want to play again until the RFEF was completely reformulated.
“The players told us they are concerned about the need for deep changes at the RFEF, and the federation has pledged that these changes will happen immediately.”Francos said Wednesday.
According to the Spanish press, one of these immediate changes could include the departure of Secretary General Andreu Camps.
Francos stated that the agreement provides for the development of Spanish legislation in the areas of “gender policy, progress in equal pay, in structures for sport and specifically for women’s football”.
