Walewska Oliveira, Olympic volleyball champion for Brazil in Beijing 2008, died on Thursday at the age of 43 after falling from the 17th floor of a building in São Paulo. The causes of death have yet to be determined and police have already opened an investigation.
The former center has been out of the sport since the 2021-2022 season and was part of the group of Brazilian Olympic champions in 2008. She finished bronze in Sydney 200 and fourth in Athens. As a player she represented clubs such as Minas, Osasco and Praia Clube.
Walewska had a biography released this year. In “Other networks” he talked about his entire career in the sport, revealing that he left home at the age of 12 and took the bus to take his first test at Minas, the club where he emerged.
On Tuesday, the former player had taken part in several events in São Paulo and was even at the Palmeiras training center, where she met Portuguese coach Abel Ferreira.
“When you receive this news, you wonder if it is worth all the sacrifice and dedication. It’s hard to be away from your family. I had the chance to share it with her, it was spectacular, she was team captain. It took about an hour.” that we exchanged ideas together, talked about her experiences (…). On social media, the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation recalled the achievements and career of the former player. “Walewska was a special player, her journey in the sport will always be remembered and praised. During this difficult time, CBV sympathizes with the family and friends of this great player,” said CBV chairman Radamés Lattari.
