This Saturday, Portugal faces Georgia, in Toulouse, in a Group C match of the France 2023 Rugby World Cup, with the aim of adding its first victory in two appearances in the largest international competition of this sport.
The Portuguese team finished the 2007 World Cup, also in France, without a victory, lost in the 2023 debut, against Wales, 28-8, and this Saturday they face the theoretically most accessible rival in Group C of the competition.
Portugal are 16th in the World Rugby rankings, while Georgia remain 13th, the lowest of all opponents – Wales are currently seventh, Fiji eighth and Australia ninth.
This is the first time that the two teams meet in a World Cup, although Georgia is one of the rivals that has faced the Portuguese team the most times since 2020.
In the last 23 years, wolves and lions have faced each other 25 times, in which Portugal only won four times, the last of them in February 2005, more than 18 years ago.
Portugal competes in Group C with Wales (lost 28-8), Georgia (September 23), Australia (October 1) and Fiji (October 8).
The 2023 World Cup in France will be held from September 8 to October 28.
