The leader Inter Milan, Benfica’s next rival in the Champions League, maintained its 100% winning streak in the Italian soccer championship this Sunday, by defeating bottom club Empoli 1-0 on matchday five.
A goal by Federico Dimarco, with a shot from outside the area with his left foot, after a corner kick, in the 51st minute, was enough for the Nerazzurri, European runners-up in the title, to add their fifth victory in five games, with 14 -1 in goals.
Inter finished the game reduced to 10 points, due to the muscle injury suffered towards the end by the Austrian Marko Arnautovic – who had entered in the 72nd minute -, at a time when Simone Inzaghi had already exhausted the substitutions.
Unlike Milan, Empoli has accumulated five defeats in the first five rounds of Serie A, with no goals scored, compared to 13 conceded.
In the standings, Inter Milan remains three points ahead of its rival AC Milan, which beat Verona 1-0 at home on Saturday, a week after being beaten precisely by Simone Inzaghi’s eleven (1-5 ).
The transalpine team debuted on Wednesday in group D of the ‘Champions’ with a 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad and in the round of 16, on October 3, they will host Benfica, who started with a 2-0 against Salzburg.
