Portuguese judoka Rochele Nunes wins the silver medal at the Baku Grand Slam

The Portuguese judoka Rochele Nunes won the silver medal this Sunday in the +78 kg category of the Baku Grand Slam (+78 kg), in what was the best result of the Portuguese women who competed in Azerbaijan.

The last day of the tournament was also marked by Jorge Fonseca’s fifth place, in the -100 kg, being defeated in one of the fights that earned him a bronze medal.

Rochele began by being exempt in the first round, before beating the Dominican Moira Morillo in the second, a result that qualified her for the quarterfinals.

She then fought against the Turkish Hilal Ozturk, also reaching the semi-finals, against the Russian Elis Startseva.

The Portuguese’s most valued rival was the Brazilian Beatriz Sousa, seventh in the ranking; Rochele is ranked 15th. The Portuguese judoka would lose, in the final, sanctioned with three penalties.

Jorge Fonseca (14th in the ranking) also went directly to the second round, where the Kazakh Bekarys Saduakas did not appear. Later he defeated the Brazilian Leonardo Gonçalves.

In the quarterfinals, the Portuguese judoka lost to the Russian Matvey Kanikovskiy, falling to the playoffs.

Then the German George Unidadlauri won and thus obtained the right to fight for bronze, but he lost to the Frenchman Aurelien Diesse and took one of the fifth places.

On Saturday, João Fernando (-81 kg) and Bárbara Timo (-63 kg) also reached fifth place. On Friday, Telma Monteiro was seventh in -57 kg.
