Olympic rower Carlos Almeida Oliveira, former national champion and representative of Portugal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, has died at the age of 80, the Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) announced on Tuesday.
Oliveira, known as Carlos Bóia, was born in Barreiro in September 1943 and stood out in rowing, with dozens of national championship titles and international participations, but he also practiced judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, athletics and roller hockey, with titles also in some of these aspects.
He was international in several disciplines, such as judo and wrestling, with national titles, and added veteran world titles in rowing, with the Olympic highlight being his participation in Munich 1972, in double scullsnext to Manuel da Silva Barroso.
He played roller hockey for CUF, an institution he also became involved with as an employee. In 2008 he received the medal of the city of Barreiro, in recognition of his sporting achievements.
“To the relatives, the Portuguese Rowing Federation and the Association of Olympic Athletes of Portugal, the Portuguese Olympic Committee offers its sincere condolences,” the COP statement said.
