Deputy Minister Ana Catarina Mendes welcomed this Wednesday “the historic moment” of FIFA’s announcement that Portugal, Spain and Morocco will jointly host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, as it is “a holiday for the Portuguese”.

In statements in the Assembly of the Republic, the Deputy Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, who oversees the field of Sports, has not provided further details about this organization for the time being, when asked whether there is a cost estimate or the number of stadiums involved in Portugal.

“We will have time to talk about the entire organization. What is relevant today is the success of the candidacy, the choice of FIFA for this candidacy, the demonstration of unity in this diversity of cultures and in the ability of sport to integrate themselves,” he said. said.

Ana Catarina Mendes opined that this is “a holiday for the Portuguese, for football and sports in Portugal”.

“We will work to ensure that the organization is once again a source of pride for the Portuguese and that is what we will be committed to in the near future,” he assured.

The minister emphasized that 2030 will mark the centenary of the Football World Cup, meaning the event will “bring together three continents and six countries, in a demonstration that sport means inclusion, integration and diversity of cultures.”

Ana Catarina Mendes also congratulated the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) “for its commitment to this candidacy, in collaboration with the Portuguese Government to make this candidacy successful.”

“It is also a demonstration of Portugal’s ability to organize major events – we came from World Youth Day, where we showed great organizational capacity – but above all it is also the confirmation of Portugal, together with Spain and Morocco, of its tradition in sports and football,” he welcomed.

For the future, the minister guaranteed that the Portuguese government will remain committed to working with the FPF so that the event will have “a nice organization”.

The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco, FIFA announced today, after the Council meeting.

“The FIFA Council has unanimously decided that the only eligible candidacy is the joint candidacy of Morocco, Portugal and Spain, which will host the competition in 2030,” FIFA said in a statement published on its official website.

In the same note, the organization also revealed that Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will host three matches at this World Cup, as a way to celebrate “the centenary” of the competition, the first edition of which took place in Uruguay, in 1930.
