Ethiopians Birhan Tesfaye and Aberu Mulisa won the men’s and women’s races respectively at the Lisbon Marathon on Sunday.
Among men, Tesfaye completed the 42.195 kilometer race in 2:09.31 minutes, with behind him Kenyan Douglas Chebii, who spent another 18 seconds (2:09.49 minutes), and Ugandan Timothy Toroitich, who completed the podium in the Portuguese capital, completing the race in 2:09.58.
José Silva Sousa was the best Portuguese in the distance and came 10th with a time of 2:25.07.
In the women’s race Ethiopian Mulisa covered the distance in 2:25.06 hours and finished completely isolated. Second place went to two other Ethiopians: Fantu Gelasa finished second with a time of 2:29.20 and compatriot Kasu Lemeneh with a time of 2:29.32.
The Lisbon Marathon, which started in Cascais, passed through Oeiras and ended in Praça do Comércio, in Lisbon, was attended by 6,000 registered athletes and started an hour earlier than initially planned, at 7 a.m., due to the planned heat for the Portuguese capital .
Cheroben and Tirusew win the Lisbon half marathon
Kenyan Abraham Cheroben and Ethiopian Enatnesh Tirusew won the men’s and women’s races of the Lisbon Half Marathon respectively.
In the men’s race, Cheroben, competing for Bahrain, completed the 21 kilometers of the race in 1:00.20, leaving Kenya’s Antony Kimutai Chebii with a time of 1:00.30, and Ethiopia’s Adane Ayele, who completed the podium in the Portuguese capital and completed the race in 1:00.40.
Rui Pinto, in sixth place, was the best Portuguese by far, with a time of 1:04.22 hours.
In the women’s race, Ethiopian Tirusew completed the 21 kilometers in 1:08.40 and finished all alone. The remaining places on the podium went to two other Ethiopians: Aynadis Tadesse finished in second place, with a time of 1:09.03, and compatriot Senayet Chekol finished in third place, with a time of 01.09.37.
