The match between Montpellier and Clermont on the eighth day of Ligue 1, the French championship, was suspended this Sunday after a firecracker exploded near Clermont’s goalkeeper, Mory Diaw.
“After a firecracker was thrown near the visiting goalkeeper in the 90th minute, for the safety of the players I invited everyone to go to the locker room. The doctor who interviewed the Clermont goalkeeper confirmed that he was not fit to return to the match. which, therefore, was definitively suspended,” explained the match referee, Florent Batta.
The incident occurred in the final stretch of the match, when Montpellier was winning 4-2, with just five minutes of added time left. A firecracker was thrown from the stands and landed inches from Mori Diaw, who fell to the ground with his hand covering his ears.
The goalkeeper, visibly affected, left the field on a stretcher. According to a police spokesperson contacted by AFP, Diaw is in hospital being treated for “trauma near the ear”.
The fan who threw the firecracker is “detained” but, so far, there has been no formal complaint against him. Montpellier could receive harsh punishments for this incident that occurred in the club’s stadium.
