Even after the change of the World Tour stage to March, the month of October remains a highlight for Peniche, where the final event of the MEO Surf League will take place from today (call at 8 a.m.) until Sunday.
In Praia do Lagido, north of Supertubos, the Bom Petisco Peniche Pro will decide the national titles, with four surfers among the men and two among the women.
Leader of the rankings with only 60 points and defending champion Guilherme Ribeiro takes to the water in yellow lycra, but it is his friend Joaquim Chaves, second in the hierarchy, who is in the best position to celebrate.
If you count the four best results of the season over the five stages, the native of Costa da Caparica is “enough” to finish third to win the first title of his career as a senior and, even if he is ninth, Ribeiro, his compatriot , is obliged to win.
From the moment Chaves scores, Afonso Antunes and Francisco Ordonhas have no mathematical chances. “It will be an interesting battle for the title and it has everything to be a great show. Guilherme and I are very good friends and we have been surfing together almost every day. He is a surfer who tries just as hard do as I do. May the best man win,” Chaves wished.
In the women’s category, the odds are on Kika Veselko, recently arrived from Brazil, where she achieved the best result of her career in a Challenger Series stage (third). The second title in the MEO League, in addition to the one in 2021, is guaranteed with a fifth place.
Gabriela Dinis, national Pro Junior champion, must win the event to surpass the world champion in her category.
Conditions will be favorable
To find the new champions, expect nothing less than a sea of quality, which Praia do Lagido looks set to offer over the next three days.
“We are going to hold a competition with favorable conditions in terms of both waves and wind. The weather will remain unstable, but what matters are the conditions in the water. They promise to be very suitable for us to get the best out of Portugal,” said the director of proves Francisco Morgado.
Matias Canhoto and Guilherme Fonseca will compete as locals and confirm the person responsible. “With these predictions, there was no better place to do the race,” the latter defended.
