North American ice hockey player Adam Johnson died after a “freak accident” during a match played in England on Saturday, his club announced on Sunday.
The 29-year-old athlete, who was representing England’s Nottingham Panthers, was struck in the neck by the blade of an opponent’s skate after a collision during the second period of the match against the Sheffield Steelers, for the English Challenge Cup, described the North American Press.
“Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident during last night’s match in Sheffield,” the club announced.
The English club emphasized that Adam Johnson “was not only an excellent ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him.”
Before arriving in Nottingham, the athlete spent time with the Pittsburgh Penguins, of the NHL, the premier North American ice hockey league, Sweden’s Malmo Redhawks and Germany’s Augsburg Panther.
