Brighton midfielder Enock Mwepu retired from football at the age of 24 due to a hereditary heart condition, the Premier League announced on Monday.
Mwepu felt unwell on a Zambia national team flight to Mali last month and was hospitalized on his return to England for further tests.
“The condition, which could worsen over time, could put Enock at very high risk of fatal heart disease if he continued to play football at a competitive level.” The club reports this in a statement.
Brighton said this problem had not been detected in the usual tests carried out on the club’s footballers.
“We are all devastated by Enock. As a club, we will give him the love, help and support he needs to help him make a full recovery. Then he will decide on the next steps in his life.” Refers to the club.
Mwepu arrived in Europe in 2017 to play for Salzburg, winning four Austrian titles, before moving to Brighton last season.
