Bas Dost has myocarditis and is taking a break from football. “Dear colleagues, NEC members and football fans. I have now heard from my cardiologist what caused what happened to me during the AZ-NEC match in Alkmaar. I have had many tests in recent days and they have shown that I have an inflamed heart muscle (myocarditis),” Bas Dost reveals in an open letter from NEC Nijmegen.
The former Sporting player (2016 to 2019) fell unconscious during a match last Sunday, causing great commotion in the stands and regaining consciousness while still on the field.
“There can be several reasons why a heart muscle becomes inflamed and the consequences can be quite serious, but I have been fortunate to have been successfully resuscitated on the field. I cannot emphasize enough how grateful I am to the doctors of NEC and AZ for their sufficient performance on the field. The tests will continue in the coming days. Then I go home and have to rest to fully recover. Only after that moment will I have more insight into my future and from then on As soon as I can tell more about it, I will take a break from football for the time being and spend the coming years with my family. I hope everyone respects that,” the 34-year-old striker admitted.
Bas Dost also promised to tell his story, ‘especially to help the sports world and learn from what happened to him’: ‘I would like to thank everyone in the football world again, at home and abroad. It has affected me and my family enormously:”
