The Benfica coach denied this Saturday that the result of the derby against Sporting, from the I Football League, has repercussions on his future with the Reds and guaranteed that he feels the club’s confidence in his work.
At a press conference in Seixal, the coach recalled that, at the end of March, he renewed his contract until 2026 because he likes “being at Benfica” and admitted that when he did it he did not expect to always be successful, but he stressed that this cannot be reason for the eagles to lose confidence in him.
“It cannot be a reason to lose the trust of Benfica and my position. I feel the trust of the club, my goal is to stay until 2026 and say goodbye to Benfica at the Marquês de Pombal. It is my goal and I believe it is possible,” concluded the coach. , after being asked about the impact that the result of Sunday’s match could have on his future at the Luz club.
Previously, Schmidt had already explained that he took responsibility for the defeat against Real Sociedad (3-1) on Wednesday in the Champions League, because as a coach he is “responsible for everything”, but he recalled that “losing games is part of the soccer.”
“When I renewed my contract, I didn’t think we would win all the titles until 2026. We have to work very hard for each title, like last season, but when you are fighting in a competition it is not a shame. We play against great teams. See Inter of Milan, which, as it also plays in Serie A, Real Sociedad is one of the best teams in Europe at the moment,” he analyzed.
For this reason, he admitted that Benfica is not “at its best level at the moment”, but insisted that this “is part of football” and showed ambition to continue winning titles.
“What we have to do is look forward, accept, be professional, work hard and show a good reaction in the next game. We are far from losing confidence. We are united as a group and in the coming years I hope we can do it.” win many titles,” he noted.
Benfica hosts Sporting on Sunday, in the 11th matchday of the 1st Portuguese Football League, whose start is scheduled for 8:30 p.m., at the Estádio da Luz, in Lisbon, and refereed by Artur Soares Dias, of the Portuguese Football Association.
