Benfica coach, Roger Schmidt, admitted that there would hardly be a better way to win a derby against Sporting like the one that occurred this Sunday.
“I think it is impossible to win a derby in a more beautiful way than this. It was a tough match, both teams showed quality, intensity. For us it was suffering until the end. Even with the red, we had to find solutions “Sporting defended well and we had to be attentive to the counterattack. The solution was to believe until the end,” said the German coach at the end of the match in statements to BTV.
Roger Schmidt praised the team’s “great attitude, display and confidence”: “They really deserved to win. Last week was not easy, especially in a week with the frustration of having left the Champions League. Playing a game like today, with this history, a lot of respect for them.”
The Benfica coach now looks to the future. “Now it’s time to rest. We had a very difficult schedule. Many away games, 3 away games, and this derby at home against Sporting. It’s not easy. Now we need to rest. We will rest with a victory. Fantastic, because it gives a good feeling,” said Roger Schmidt.
Benfica beat Sporting 2-1 this Sunday, a result achieved with two goals already in added time.
