Extraordinary FC Porto GA suspended and rescheduled for November 20

The extraordinary General Assembly (AG) of FC Porto was suspended this Tuesday, announced the president of the General Assembly Council (MAG) of the club, and work will resume on November 20, at 9 p.m., in the Dragão Arena pavilion .

In a note published on its official website, the I Liga football club revealed the position adopted by José Lourenço Pinto, without specifying the reasons, after a hectic main session and confrontation between partners, which focused on the deliberation of new club statutes, but, Due to the large participation, it changed location at the last minute.

The extraordinary GA was scheduled for 9 p.m., in an auditorium at the Estádio do Dragão, with capacity for almost 400 people, a figure much lower than that of the partners who met nearby, which motivated the MAG to move the work to the Dragão Arena, which has more than 2,000 spectators on match days.

The main meeting resumed after 10:30 p.m., but several people left the place shortly after, after altercations in the stands, as demonstrated by the videos published on social networks and the stories of the members who managed to enter.

José Fernando Rio and Nuno Lobo, candidates defeated by Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa in the club’s last elections, in 2020, were part of the long queues that formed since the beginning of the night near the FC Porto stadium, the businessman assured , in statements to the media, which will request the challenge of this extraordinary AG.

“We are all Porto. It was not a happy night, it’s true. We regret what happened, but the responsibility lies with whoever organizes the GA, as has happened in other clubs. As members, we reserve the right to disagree with two or three articles that seem illegal to us in any commercial society. We will accept our disagreement in the appropriate place,” stressed Nuno Lobo, in a note sent to the editors moments after the MAG announcement.

André Villas-Boas, former coach and potential candidate for the next FC Porto elections, also attended and criticized the AG’s guidelines to approve the draft statutory modification, which changes from April to June as the limit for holding the FC Porto elections. club.

“One of the darkest days in the history of FC Porto. Without shame, without scruples, without any respect for the members of this great club. On November 20 the members will be present again. FC Porto needs to live up to its principles, its values and its bases. What happened today can never be [mais] happen again,” lamented the former coach, reacting on his social networks to the postponement of the AG.

In an interview given almost three weeks ago to the weekly Expresso, André Villas-Boas, 46, admitted the possibility of running in the quadrennial ‘blue and white’ elections, which will take place in 2024, but has not yet announced any candidacy.

The hypothetical adoption of electronic and postal voting, a minimum seniority of 15 years, instead of the current 10, to run for president or access to the right to vote after two uninterrupted years as a member are some of the changes being debated.

Prepared by the Superior Council, FC Porto’s advisory body, the document protects the maintenance of the majority of SAD’s share capital against a possible entry of new investors, also expanding the opening to do business between the heads of the governing bodies and the ‘ dragons’, as long as they safeguard the “clear interest of the club.”

Any modification of the statutes will require a two-thirds vote in favor for approval, coming into force the day after the publication of the public deed, which must be carried out within the following 30 days in the Commercial Registry.
