Pichardo among the finalists for the prize for the best in the world of 2022

Portuguese Pedro Pichardo, European and world triple jump champion, is one of 10 nominees for the 2022 World Athlete Prize, including Swede Armand Duplantis, World Athletics announced on Thursday.

Pichardo, 29, born in Cuba, won the gold medal at the Eugene World Championships, in the United States, with the best world mark of the year (17.95 meters), and at the European Championships in Munich, Germany, after also taking the silver medal at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

The Portuguese athlete, who is also an Olympic champion on the move, having won the triple jump at the Tokyo 2020 Games, was left out of the final list of three nominees for the prize for best European athlete of 2022, including Duplantis, Norway’s Jakob. Ingebrigtsen and the Greek Miltiadis Tentoglou.

Ingebrigtsen, world champion in the 5,000 meters, runner-up in the 1,500 meters and winner of both distances at the European Championships, is also one of the candidates for the World Athletics trophy, unlike Tentoglou, but the favor falls to Duplantis and Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge.

The Swede broke the world record three times last year, namely 6.21 meters outdoors and 6.20 meters indoors, winning all major titles: world champion in Eugene and Belgrade and European in Munich.

Kipchoge also broke the marathon world record, which he already held, to 2:01:09, having also won the Belim and Tokyo marathons.

Slovenian Kristjan Ceh (discus throw), Brazilian Alison dos Santos (400m hurdles), Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali (3,000m hurdles), Americans Grant Holloway (110m hurdles) and Noah Lyles (200m hurdles) and Grenadian Anderson Peters (javelin throwing ), all world champions, fill in the list of candidates.
