Sporting president Frederico Varandas said on Friday that FC Porto fans have “woken to life” after 40 years, saying the ‘dragons’ have been held hostage by ‘a praetorian guard’.
“I saw what everyone saw. I saw what the figures from the FC Porto universe said. I see that after forty years they woke up to life. Who they have at home and who they have been deifying for decades”he said upon arrival at the 41st edition of Roars of Leão, which takes place at Quinta do Paul, in Ortigosa, Leiria.
Frederico Varandas, who explained that he would speak about Sporting during the ceremony, commented on the extraordinary General Meeting (AG) of FC Porto, marked by confrontation between partners, which led to the suspension of the main meeting.
“The club has been held hostage by a Praetorian guard, but I think we should have the courage to say that this Praetorian guard is not the real problem, but rather the one who fed them and gave them power for decades,” Frederico Varandas stressed.
The chairman of the ‘lions’ also defended that ‘whoever orders this praetorian guard to do this against opponents, referees, journalists, if necessary, also does so against its own members’.
“It has a name and it appears in every social science textbook,” Varandas said, taking refuge in the question of whether he was talking about Pinto da Costa, president of FC Porto.
The day after the General Assembly, FC Porto’s management condemned the disrespect and guaranteed that it “will use the means at its disposal to identify those responsible for the physical attacks and mobilize the social authorities”, in order to to the opening of a disciplinary procedure. while the Ministry Público (MP) opened an investigation into the incidents observed at the Dragão Arena.
On Thursday, the proposal to revise FC Porto’s statutes, which was to be deliberated by the ‘dragon’ members on Monday, was withdrawn by the Supreme Court.
The president of the Council of the General Assembly (MAG) of the ‘dragons’, José Lourenço Pinto, must now, as president of MAG, complete the legal procedures to cancel the main meeting that had been postponed until next Monday.
