The PSP seized several items on Tuesday, including torches and batons, from a group of 50 Sporting Clube Portugal supporters suspected of setting off pyrotechnic devices near the Estádio de Alvalade, it was announced on Wednesday.
In a statement, the PSP said that the police action that led to the seizure of the equipment took place in the context of a football match for the Champions League, which will take place on Wednesday between Sporting and Olympique de Marseille.
The PSP placed agents “in different parts of the city of Lisbon” to check the “different groups of supporters walking around”, after being approached “a group of 50 individuals, Sporting Clube de Portugal supporters, all dressed in black, suspected from setting off pyrotechnic devices near the José Alvalade stadium,” the statement said.
During this action, 11 balaclavas, 11 complete flares, two extendable sticks, a pair of tactical Kevlar gloves, a craft shredder, a craft stick, a rocket, a cutting torch, a can of green paint and a collar were seized.
Wednesday at 00:00 PSP discovered a group of 150 fans of Olympique de Marseille, in the Praça da Figueira district, “who wandered the streets of the city with suspicion of a possible confrontation with other supporters, and after approach and identification, nothing illegal was found in their possession,” the statement said.
Sporting Clube de Portugal will host Olympique de Marseille this Wednesday from 8 p.m. in a match that counts for the 4th round of group D of the group stage of the Champions League.
The Portuguese squad, coached by Rúben Amorim, lead Group D with six points, two more than Tottenham and Eintracht Frankfurt, while Marseille is last with three.
