US court rejects rape complaint against Cristiano Ronaldo

A US court on Tuesday rejected an appeal from the American Kathryn Mayorga, who requested compensation of 25 million dollars (23.6 million euros) from Cristiano Ronaldo.

In the case of alleged rape in 2009, Mayorga’s defense had asked the 9th District Court of Appeals, in San Francisco, to revoke the decision of a federal judge in Las Vegas, in June 2022, to confirm the presentation of the complaint and reopen it. the civil damages lawsuit, initiated in 2018.

The lawyer argued that Judge Jennifer Dorsey should not have rejected Mayorga’s attempts to make public the confidential agreement he signed in 2010 and for which he received $375,000 (about 343,500 euros).

The American, who accuses the Portuguese international of having raped her in a Las Vegas hotel in 2009, even asked for compensation of 25 million dollars (23.6 million euros).

A three-judge panel of the appeals court rejected the argument that Dorsey abused his discretion by fining Mayorga’s lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall, $335,000 (almost 307,000 euros) for “bad faith conduct” in the process.

Dorsey accused Stovall of improperly basing the civil damages claim on stolen confidential documents showing communications between Cristiano Ronaldo and his lawyers.

The news of the financial agreement with Mayorga was made public by the German media Der Spiegel, in an article published in 2017 titled ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’s secret’ based on documents obtained from the digital platform ‘Football Leaks’.

“The district court clearly recognized the seriousness of dismissing the case and, accordingly, provided a thorough analysis, amply supported by factual findings,” Judge Johnnie Rawlinson wrote in Tuesday’s six-page opinion.
