UEFA creates a new women’s club competition and changes the Champions League

The UEFA Executive Committee today decided to reformulate the Women’s Champions League from the 2025/26 season, a season in which a new women’s club competition will also begin.

The new women’s Champions League model will replicate the men’s, going from having a group stage to having a league with 18 teams, with each team playing six games, three at home and three away, before the knockout phase.

The president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) reacted “with natural enthusiasm” to the creation of the new competition, which does not yet have a name.

“It is an important step towards the growth and affirmation of women’s football at the European level and, therefore, also in Portugal,” assumed Fernando Gomes.

These changes should allow Portugal to have more clubs in European competitions, unlike what currently happens where only the champion has access to the previous rounds of ‘Champions’.

More details about the Champions League and the new competition, as well as the respective format, calendar and access method, will be announced on Monday.

The Women’s Futsal Euro Cup will now be played every four years, with the 2024/25 edition cancelled, and the next championship will take place in 2027, two years after the first World Cup.
