Nightmare afternoon for I Liga teams in the Portuguese Cup: five eliminated

Boavista was eliminated from the Portuguese Football Cup today, after losing 1-0 to Machico, in the Portuguese Championship, in a third round match. The team from Madeira, classified ninth in the Series B of the fourth tier, triumphed against the chess players, fifth in the I Liga, with a goal by Roberto Gouveia, in the 45th minute.

Machico secured his presence in the fourth round. Like Vit. Setúbal (Liga 3), which eliminated the first division Paços de Ferreira. At Estádio do Bonfim, the sadinos took the lead in the 46th minute with a goal from José Varela, extending the lead in the 70th minute via François.

With this triumph (2-0), Vit. Setúbal advances to the next round of the Portuguese Cup, a match they have already won three times. Lank Vilaverdense also eliminated Portimonense, from the I Liga, by winning 2-0 in a third round match. The team leading Serie A of Liga 3, still without defeats, opened the scoring in the 31st minute, through André Soares, and scored the second one towards the end of the match, with Edmilson scoring at 90+2.

Rio Ave, on the other hand, became another I Liga team that got knocked out this afternoon. Vilacondenses was defeated by Oliveira do Hospital-Rio Ave, 3-2. Chaves also lost to Valadares Gaia, 3-2, after extra time, and retired from the Portuguese Cup. The 4th level team continues.

The SP. Braga went against the trend and defeated Felgueiras (2-1). Bruno Rodrigues gave the Minho a lead, but Daniel Rodrigues equalized three minutes later. A goal from central defender Paulo Oliveira, scored in the 89th minute, gave Braga the victory on the Liga 3 team’s grounds. Braga already took the trophy in 1965-66, 2015-16 and 2020-21 and thus returned to winning ways, after four games without a win in all competitions.

Varzim-Sporting and Anadia-FC Porto will also play tonight.
