On Sunday, the Public Security Police (PSP) arrested 55 supporters of the Benfica and Sporting cheerleaders, after clashes that occurred before the futsal derby played by the two clubs, reported the Lisbon Metropolitan Command.
“In the field of policing for today’s futsal game [domingo]characterized as a high-risk game, between Sport Lisboa e Benfica (SLB) and Sporting Clube de Portugal (SCP), held at the Complexo Desportivo da Luz, at 4:50 p.m., several observers detected several groups of supporters of SCP and SLB , in clashes at the intersection of Estrada da Luz with Rua dos Soeiros and Rua Tomás da Fonseca,” the same source said in a statement.
The Lisbon Metropolitan Command said that, after traveling to the scene, the different police teams carried out an intervention “to restore public order, through the use of force”, and with the aim of “containing and isolating” the involved in the conflict. .
“This intervention resulted in 49 arrests of SCP supporters, two of whom were minors, and 6 arrests of SLB supporters. Hats and instruments of aggression were also seized”, lists the same note.
The statement also clarifies that the detainees “will be presented before the competent Judicial Authority.”
The Metropolitan Command of Lisbon also reported that, “as usual”, the PSP previously defined a ‘meeting point’ for supporters of the SCP, where a group of some 200 supporters attended, “having been accompanied (…) all the way without any incident”.
The same source also called on supporters who attend sporting events “to follow the guidelines of the Public Security Police and not adopt violent, conflictive or other behaviors that violate the rights of third parties, peace and public order” .
