Sporting urgently calls for standardization of the video referee criteria

Sporting on Tuesday called for urgent standardization of video refereeing (VAR) criteria in football, saying it is important to ensure there are only specialists in the role.

“VAR is an essential tool for greater fairness and transparency in competitions. Anyone who does not defend VAR is not defending the search for sporting truth. Sporting therefore calls for urgent uniformity and understanding of the VAR protocol by referees. The referees win, the clubs win, sporting truth wins”reads a statement.

That is what the Lions claim in meetings with Vitória de Guimarães (2-3) and FC Porto (2-0) “it was very clear how the VAR used opposing criteria”while “In both cases it was Sporting who were disadvantaged”.

“Sporting’s critical analysis regarding arbitration criteria depends on the urgent need to define them and on the transparency of decisions. It makes no sense to adopt one intervention criterion one week and another the next.”says the club.

So sporty “also thinks it is important to work towards specialized and exclusive VAR referees”although I do recognize that “The current number of referees does not allow this at the moment”challenging the Arbitration Board of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to begin “preparing the future”.

“Sporting recognizes the efforts of the Arbitration Council to improve arbitration and will continue to fight for sporting truth. This will never exist without free, independent and qualified arbitration”there is.

Sporting remembers that being the case “only when he presented the proposal to implement measures that allow the dissemination of audio and guarantee greater transparency in arbitration and integrity at the competitions themselves”and calls for good practices to be adopted from other countries.
