Benfica qualified for the semi-finals of the Football League Cup on Thursday by beating II League side AVS 4-1 at Estádio da Luz, guaranteeing victory in Group B.
John Mercado even put the visitors ahead in the 21st minute, but Ángel Di Maria (31), João Mário (44), Tiago Gouveia (65) and Anthony (68) led the turnaround in their own goal, allowing the Reds to win their group ‘ and add six points, compared to three from the already eliminated Arouca and zero from Thursday’s opponent.

In the last four of the League Cup, to be played in Leiria on January 23, 24 and 27, 2024, Benfica will face Estoril Praia, who won Group D, while in the other semi-final the group winners A (Casa Pia of Sporting de Braga) and C (Sporting or Tondela).
