“The Portuguese League notes, with regret, the existence of an incident in the stands of the Estádio da Luz […] which culminated in the transfer of a fan, fortunately in a stable condition, to the hospital,” the organization states.
The incident occurred during the break of the match between Benfica and AVSof the third day of Group B of the League Cup, which the Lisbon team won 4-1the victim being a 44-year-old man, in a case that two red fans involved.
“This fan was stabbed in the abdomen, suffered minor injuries and, after being assisted by rescue teams, was transferred to the Santa María hospital, explained a source from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command (Cometlis) of the PSP.
The LPFP wanted The “rapid recovery” of the fan and thanked the “prompt intervention” of the emergency services present at the scene, also expressing the hope that Host clubs take special care. to avoid these types of problems.
“The Portuguese League urges the authorities responsible for football security operations to quickly and effectively determine responsibilities for what happened and to reinforce preventive measures so that similar situations do not occur again in Portuguese stadiums,” the organization added. .
The man suspected of the stabbing was no longer at the scene when police arrived and the PSP is taking steps to identify him, the same police source added.
Benfica “deeply regretted” what happened and revealed that it had communicated to the authorities “all available information” to be able to locate the attacker.
