Benfica’s president, Rui Costa, congratulated Diogo Ribeiro on winning three gold medals at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima, referring to “an entire country that dreams of even more diverse achievements”.

What Diogo Ribeiro achieved in the junior swimming worlds – three gold medals at the age of 17 and a world record in 50 meters mariposa – makes Sport Lisboa e Benfica immensely proud and an entire country that dreams of even more distinctive achievements in the future,” said Rui Costa in a message on the club’s official website.
Diogo Ribeiro won the junior world swimming title in the 50m mariposa on Saturday, in Lima, with a world level record, adding this achievement to the gold medals in the 50 free and 100 mariposa.
The Benfica swimmer won the 50 butterfly in 22.96 seconds, improving by nine hundredths the junior world record held by Russian Andrei Minakov (23.05) since October 2020, and also clearing 11 hundredths of the national record that already belonged to him.
“We are faced with a great talent, whose dedication and dedication honor all Benfica fans. It is a huge privilege for the club to continue to grow and accompany all this ambition,” added the chairman of the incarnates.
Diogo Ribeiro holds the national records of 100 meters freestyle (48.52 seconds) and 100 (51.61) and 50 (22.96) mariposa, distance in which he won the bronze medal among the last absolute Europeans, in Rome.
