Equestrian increases the number of disciplines with a guaranteed place for Paris 2024 to nine

This Tuesday, equestrian increased the number of disciplines with a guaranteed passport for Paris 2024 to nine, with Portugal having, for now, 25 guaranteed places in the next Olympic Games.

It was thanks to the positions of María Caetano (dressage) and Duarte Seabra (obstacles) in the Olympic classification ranking of the International Equestrian Federation, closed on December 31, 2023, that equestrian ‘entered’ the list of disciplines that will represent Portugal in the French capital.

The individual places guaranteed by these two riders are, however, for the country, and it is up to the Portuguese Equestrian Federation to indicate later who will occupy them at Paris 2024.

With the two places guaranteed this Tuesday in equestrian, there are now 25 places guaranteed by Portugal for Paris2024, something that occurs practically a month after Samuel Barata and Susana Godinho reached minimums in the marathon.

In Valencia, the two marathoners increased the number of ‘qualifiers’ in athletics to six, although, in this modality, with the ranking giving 50% of the places and the rest to be occupied by athletes with minimum qualifications, only on June 30 . The final list of those selected will be known in 2024.

However, Auriol Dongmo, in the shot put, Isaac Nader, in the 1,500 meters, João Coelho, in the 400 meters, and Ana Cabecinha, in the 20 kilometer walk, have already reached the qualification mark required by World Athletics.

Before the feat of Barata and Godinho, it was trampoline gymnastics that ensured its presence in the French capital, after Pedro Ferreira and Gabriel Albuquerque reached the men’s individual trampoline final of the World Gymnastics Championships.

Despite being represented by two gymnasts in the final in Birmingham, England, Portugal was only entitled to a place for the Paris 2024 Games, as the eight finalists in the men’s and women’s competitions guaranteed a place for the country, with the limitation of one vacancy per nation.

In artistic gymnastics, Filipa Martins achieved a place thanks to 27th place in the classification and qualification for the ‘All-Around’ final of the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium.

The gymnast secured one of the 14 individual places for the ‘All-Around’ after accounting for the team places.

With sixth place in the time trial at the last World Cups, Nelson Oliveira had already guaranteed a place for the Portuguese colors in this specialty, with the ranking assigning another two places in the distance race and one more in the ‘chrono’. the two cyclists having to be the same in both tests.

Portugal, 12th in the men’s ranking, thus repeats the two cyclists from Tokyo2020, still to be defined by the coach, once again having a cyclist in the women’s long-distance race, something that has not happened since Atlanta1996.

Portugal already has a certain presence in canoeing, swimming, surfing, sailing and hunting weapons shooting.

At the end of September, Maria Inês Barros ‘sealed’ a place for the Portuguese team by proclaiming herself European champion in hunting weapons shooting (trap), in Osijek, Croatia, days after Teresa Portela secured one of the three places in canoeing. her in K1 500 meters, after eighth place in the final of the World Championships in Duisburg, Germany.

The K1 500 was the third boat qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, after the K1 1,000, with the silver of Fernando Pimenta in the same competition, and the K2 500, of the world champions João Ribeiro and Messias Baptista.

In swimming, four swimmers are guaranteed in Paris, highlighting Diogo Ribeiro, world runner-up in the 50-meter butterfly, who has already reached minimums in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle and in the 100-meter butterfly.

For the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held between July 26 and August 11 next year, João Costa (100 meters backstroke), Camila Rebelo (200 meters backstroke) and Miguel Nascimento (50 meters freestyle) also have minima.

Thanks to the World Surf League ranking, Teresa Bonvalot knows that she will compete for the second consecutive year in the surfing competition at the Olympic Games, which will be held in French Polynesia.

In sailing, Diogo Costa and Carolina João were the first to get a place for Portugal, in 470, at the World Championships in The Hague, where Eduardo Marques also got a place in the ILCA 7.

Vasileia Karachilou, a Greek who competes for Portugal with a special World Sailing license, also obtained a place in ILCA 6, but the Greek Olympic Committee has already said that it did not authorize the participation of the Portuguese sailor, with the due quota, so , move to another nation.
