“Attempted rape.” Footballer Mason Greenwood released on bail

English international footballer Mason Greenwood, charged with “attempted rape” and “intentional assault”, will be released on bail, the Manchester court said on Wednesday.

The request for bail was accepted, two days after the Manchester United player appeared in court for the first time, while in preventive detention.

The court spokesman explained that a new request for release was accepted, on the condition that Greenwood, 21, did not contact any witnesses, including the plaintiff, and had a fixed address.

Wednesday’s hearing was held without the presence of the player, who is expected to appear before a judge again on November 21.

The player was first arrested in January, after photos and videos appeared on social networks of a young woman with a bloody face, bruises and the phrase: “For anyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood really did to me.”

The attempted rape would have been committed in October 2021 and the attack two months later.

The accusation of “controlling and coercive conduct” refers to events between November 2018 and October of this year, in which the player sent threatening and insulting messages to the complainant.

English soccer hopeful Mason Greenwood has been suspended by Manchester United from training and matches following his arrest.

In the days that followed, sponsors also distanced themselves from the player, Nike terminated the contract on February 7, and video game giant EA Sports dropped him from its FIFA2022 squads.
