England international Mason Greenwood, charged with “attempted rape” and “intentional assault”, has been released on bail, the court in Manchester said on Wednesday.
The bail request was accepted two days after the Manchester United player first appeared in court and was held in protective custody.
The court spokesman explained that a new release request was accepted, provided Greenwood, 21, did not contact any witnesses, including the plaintiff, and had a permanent address.
Wednesday’s hearing took place without the player present, who is expected to appear in court again on November 21.
The player was first arrested in January after photos and videos of a young woman with a bloody face, bruises and the sentence appeared on social media: “For anyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood really did to me.”
The attempted rape was allegedly committed in October 2021 and the attack two months later.
The charge of “controlling and coercive behavior” refers to acts between November 2018 and October this year in which the player posted threatening and abusive messages to the whistleblower.
English football hope Mason Greenwood has been banned from training and games by Manchester United after his arrest.
In the days that followed, sponsors also distanced themselves from the player, with Nike canceling the contract on February 7 and video game giant EA Sports removing him from their FIFA2022 rosters.
