Kenyan Kenneth Kiprop Renju, winner of the Lisbon Half Marathon on May 22, has been provisionally suspended for doping by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU).
The update, released this Wednesday, of The UAI’s current tentative suspension list now includes Renju and another Kenyan, Ibrahim Mukunga Wachira, suspending that country’s athletes for doping at 30. Renju was caught by metasteton and Wachira by norandrosterone.
Renju was national champion in the 10,000 meters in April this year, after he won the 10 kilometers in Lille in March. He also won the half marathons in Prague, in April, and in the Portuguese capital.
Wachira has a less strong record, with a half marathon in Estonia standing out in 2017. This year he finished third in the ‘half’ of Ras Al Khaima.
Renju and Wachira’s suspension comes just four days after 2021 Boston Marathon winner Diana Kipyokei and compatriot Betty Wilson Lempus were banned for using banned substances. Three days earlier, the suspensions of Mark Kangogo and Philemon Kacheran had been announced.
In 2016, Kenya was placed in Category A of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Compliance Watch List.
