Sporting equals worst records of this century in defeats

Sporting lost six of the 14 games they played in all competitions this season (43%). The debacle with Varzim, from Liga 3, which brought the lions out of the Portuguese Cup, was the second in a row, third in the last four games and the fifth game in a row for the team to concede goals. More than enough data to talk about the crisis in Alvalade.

To give you an idea, last season the Lions only suffered their sixth defeat after playing 38 official games, a clear sign that the team’s performance is well below the requirement this season. However, the place of Rúben Amorim is not in dispute.

The current record (six defeats in 14 games) is among Sporting’s worst this century – the Lions matched the number of defeats in the negative campaigns of the 2000-01, 2005-06, 2012-13 and 2019-20 seasons. However, in the case of the current season, the percentage of wins is 50%, with the worst record in 2012-13 (14.2%), when the team finished the championship in seventh place, recording only two wins in the first 14 matches of the season.

The trauma of Christmas seems to return to Alvalade. The team is already out of the Portuguese Cup in mid-October, in the league it follows in sixth place but already nine points behind leader Benfica and in the Champions League it threatens not to qualify after a promising start. for the round of 16 (on the 26th they have a difficult journey to the Tottenham field).

Rúben Amorim was harsh in his words towards the end of the match which dictated the elimination with Varzim and criticized the team. She took the blame, but spoke of an “unacceptable moment”, a “limited team of ideas” and promised that “debt will not die alone”.

Sporting’s coach also left a message that could be interpreted as a warning to the direction. When he revealed that Sporting will not be active in the January transfer market, he pointed the way: “You have to think very carefully again, because we have to go into another cycle and do what we did in the first year, with talented young people. time to react with panic because we are out of a competition, we have to start a new cycle.”

William’s Faith and JL’s Lament

William de Carvalho, a former Sporting player who plays for Betis, in the Spanish league, believes Rúben Amorim will overcome the crisis and is asking the new players time to adapt. “I think a player, whoever he is, starts in most games and gets sold is missing. The players who arrive don’t have the same routines and take longer. Sporty, but I haven’t followed the games much I think that Rúben Amorim will turn around with the quality he has and have an excellent season,” said the Portuguese international midfielder, in the context of a virtual meeting promoted by La Liga and Eleven Sports.

Youth cheerleader Leonina yesterday also insisted on expressing his disappointment at the early exit from the Cup as the players against Varzim were not worthy of wearing the club jersey: “Respect Sporting! and our fans who follow you faithfully, wherever you play! [anteontem] were not worthy to wear the green and white striped! From the chairman to the director to the coach, we want union, from the oldest to the youngest player, champion instinct!”, read the post on social media.

This was the eleventh time the club from Alvalade has been eliminated from the Portuguese Cup in the first round – the last taking place in 2019-20 and the sixth time the Portuguese football queen league has been overthrown by top-class clubs inferior – 1948-49 for Tirsense, in 1998-99 for Gil Vicente, in 2002-03 for Naval, in 2003-04 against V. Setúbal and in 2019-20 for Alverca.
