Tormena gives victory to Sp. Braga in the Minho derby at 90+8′

After 90+8 minutes, Ricardo Horta, who had already missed a penalty in the 58th minute, took a free kick and Tormena came in unmarked and scored the only goal of a balanced game with his head.

Sporting de Braga are in second place, adding their fourth straight win, but today showed some gaps among other games, also credit to Vitória de Guimarães, who knew how to tackle Braga’s key attacking pieces.

With a personal display in the first half and a spirit of sacrifice in the second, as Sporting de Braga tightened their grip, Vitória de Guimarães could have exited the Minho derby with a draw, but the good defensive organization they showed for the most part of the match showed game was betrayed at the last move.

Sporting de Braga’s coach repeated the ‘elf’ for the fourth time in a row, while Vitória de Guimarães’ coach made four changes, giving Jorge Fernandes, Ryoya Ogawa, André André and Nélson da Luz the title.

Presenting themselves with three centre-backs, the Victorians did not allow major whims to the Bragas in the first half, a period in which they created danger only after three minutes, in a direct free kick from Iuri Medeiros, almost on top of the penalty area line, which came out slightly to the side.

This best entry from Sporting de Braga was short-lived and Vitória de Guimarães forced their play in midfield by tackling the attacking storm that rivals showed in previous rounds.

After a good individual play in the sixth minute, Anderson created the first big chance for the Guimarães team, but Matheus with a great defense withstood the strong shot from the Brazilian striker well inside the area (11).

The best chance of the first half was also for the Victorians, with Nélson da Luz firing Matheus from the side (33).

Shortly before (32) Moreno had withdrawn the ‘yellow’ Afonso Freitas (in Zé Carlos) after a foul that could have led to his second yellow card and respective exclusion.

The same reason (yellow card) will have dictated the replacement of central Jorge Fernandes by Tounkara at half time.

In the 58th minute, Ricardo Horta lost the penalty, which penalized a foul by André Amaro on Fabiano in the area and shot wide.

Shortly after, Artur launched Jorge Castro and Álvaro Djaló to replace Al Musrati (who left visibly disgruntled) and Iuri Medeiros.

Vitória de Guimarães, whose coach, Moreno, was sent off after 62 minutes, fell physically and into production and Sporting de Braga ‘woke’ for a better performance.

Dani Silva and Safira (73) and Matheus Índio (77), in Vitória, and Abel Ruiz (76) and Diego Lainez (87), in Braga, were the last bets of the two teams.

As the game looked to be heading for a draw, an unnecessary foul by Victorians Sporting de Braga enabled one last offensive – Tormena looked isolated and ‘Pedreira’ exploded.
