Former Jorge Jesus player stabbed near Milan

Spanish centre-back Pablo Mari, on loan from Arsenal to Monza, was among those injured in a knife attack this Wednesday at a supermarket near Milan. The attack, carried out by a 46-year-old Italian who suffers from psychiatric disorders, left one dead and four injured.

The suspect in the attack was detained by the Carabinieri (Italian police) moments after the incident occurred late afternoon in a shopping center in Assago, on the outskirts of Milan, Italy’s ANSA news agency reported.

According to the initial information, which indicated four injured, three of them in serious condition, the attacker took a knife from the shelves of a supermarket in a shopping center and began stabbing those present.

The president of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, said via the social network Facebook that a young hypermarket employee has died and that the other injured do not appear to die.

According to Italian media, one of the injured is Spanish defender Pablo Marí Vilar, loaned by the English from Arsenal to Monza, of the I Italian Football League and owned by the politician Silvio Berlusconi.

The Spanish player has been transported to Niguarda Hospital in Milan, where he is conscious, and his condition is not serious, according to ANSA.

At the hospital entrance, Adriano Galliani pointed out that the 29-year-old Spanish footballer confided in him that he was lucky when he saw a person die in front of him after being injured in the back.

Galliani explained that the Valencian defender suffered “a very deep wound in the back” but is “not in danger” as he was unable to reach vital organs but required several stitches.

The manager added that the defender is “bright” and even joked that he would “play on Monday”, referring to the fact that Italian police went to hospital to retrieve the statement from the player’s wife.

Serie A president Lorenzo Casini expressed his “heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family” and “the other injured, including a Monza player”.

The Carrefour chain, to which the supermarket belongs, expressed in a statement “the utmost solidarity with the employees and customers involved in the attack and their families” and confirmed that the police had been called immediately and that the attacker was arrested.

The company also immediately activated “a psychological support service for all employees directly or indirectly involved in the incident”.
