Sporting de Braga hampered the chances of continuing in the Europa League this Thursday by losing 1-0 to Union Berlin, the current leader of the Bundesliga. The goal came in the 68th minute, after a penalty that German defender Robin Knoche used to beat Matheus.
Braga tried to avoid defeat and even had two good chances, via Ricardo Gomes and Ricardo Horta. However, the truth is that Union Berlin turned out to be the team that did the most to win, taking 14 shots in all, against just five of Sp. braga.
With this result, the Minho team dropped to third place and kept the seven points, leaving them no opportunity to stay in first place, giving direct entry to the round of 16 of the competition and already guaranteed by the Belgians Union Saint Gilloise, who went to Sweden to beat Malmö 2-0.
Therefore, on the last day of play, next week, Artur Jorge’s team will have to beat Malmö at home – a team that has not yet scored – and wait for Union Berlin to lose in Belgium, to climb to second place and discuss a game-away with the third-placed teams from the Champions League. If this combination of results fails, Sporting de Braga will move to the Conference League, as third place is already guaranteed.
