FIA fines Red Bull seven million, Verstappen retains 2021 title

Red Bull has agreed to pay a fine of seven million euros and reduce the use of the wind tunnel by one year for exceeding the cost cap in 2021, the International Automobile Federation announced on Friday.

The team, which is already world champion, therefore accepts that it has violated the regulation of cost control because it has exceeded the ceiling of 145 million euros.

However, this is considered a “minor violation”, since the excess amount spent is less than five percent of the allowed amount (according to the conclusions of the International Federation (FIA), Red Bull used about 500 thousand euros more, which corresponds to up to 0 .37 percent of the allowable value).

In a statement, the FIA said the team “has always shown that it is cooperating” with the investigation, providing “all the elements requested”, the FIA concluded, “there is no indication of bad faith”.

So Red Bull agreed to pay a fine of seven million euros and receive a small sports fine, which translates into a reduction of about 10 percent in the time spent using the wind tunnel for the development of its single-seater.

The UK team will also cover all the legal costs.

For example, the specter of losing points in the 2021 season, which could mean losing the drivers’ title to Dutchman Max Verstappen, won after a duel with Briton Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) in the final race of the season, in Abu Dhabi.
