Belarusian rider Dmitriy Mazanov (Husqvarna) was denied entry into Baja de Portalegre, in the motorcycle competition, due to sanctions against Russia and Belarus following the invasion of Ukraine in February.
In a video on his social media, Mazanov complains that he is not allowed to participate because of his “nationality”.
“Again, I can’t start a race because of my nationality. I’m Belarusian, but I haven’t lived there for a few years now. I live in Ukraine, where I participate in several competitions and prepare for the Dakar. In the past For three years I fought in different countries with the Ukrainian license and won several titles and medals,” said the Husqvarna driver, who dreams of “qualifying for the Dakar”.
The decision to refuse the participation of riders of Russian and Belarusian nationality (Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is Russia’s main ally) was taken by the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) as part of a series of “emergency measures” after the invasion.
However, Mazanov assures that he does not support the war.
“Unfortunately, this spring, the FIM decided to ban civilians from Russia and Belarus, even those who share a vision of human rights and who oppose the war and were forced to leave their homes because of their position. Lukashenko is not like other citizens of Belarus, as they do not support these actions. Therefore, these sanctions should not be against the citizens of Belarus,” argues Mazanov.
The Belarusian motorcyclist even used irony when he lamented the Portuguese organization’s decision.
“Someone from FMP [Federação de Motociclismo de Portugal] decided that my absence would end the war. I hope that happens soon,” he said.
The FMP president Manuel Marinheiro explained to the Lusa agency that this is a measure implemented by the International Federation and supported “by several federations”.
“There is a decision by the FIM that all other federations must adhere to. It is a complicated decision to make, but something has to be done,” he emphasized.
In question the nationality of the pilots and not the country issuing the sports license [Mazanov competiu já com a licença ucraniana].
Baja de Portalegre is the final event of the Portuguese off-road championship and takes place between Friday and Saturday in that district of Alto Alentejo.
About 400 teams of 22 nationalities take part in this commemorative edition of the competition’s 35th anniversary.
